Barber of Vognmagergade

If you’re looking for a classic barbershop with a story, look no further. The Barber of Vognmagergade is not only a professional shop offering quality cuts to loyal customers, but it’s also one of the oldest ones in the city with a fascinating history.
The Barber of Vognmagergade opened its doors in 1937. On retirement, the original owner, Kaj Ratsack Due, left the business to his first ever apprentice, Mogens Christensen, who took over in 1944 and went on to run the shop for forty years. An active in the resistance movement during WWII, as well as a skilled craftsman, Christenson blocked out the windows of Vognmagergade during the war, but continued business, as usual, turning the shop into a meeting point and safe space for likeminded people in the city.
Christensen was also responsible for hiring the first ever women in men’s hairdressing in Denmark, making newspapers again in the 1950s. There have been a number of owners since Christensen, but his legacy reigns true. The traditional decor will transport you back to the 1930s with old-school barber chairs, mirrored walls, and clean-cut, suited staff.
The Barber of Vognmagergade is a no-nonsense salon with a list of services just as uncomplicated as it would have been in the 40s. Find them on the equally historic Vognmagergade, just south of Rosenborg Castle Gardens in the Old Town of Copenhagen.

How much does a men’s haircut cost in Copenhagen?
Copenhagen is a notoriously expensive city, and when it comes to hair styling, it’s no different. The cheapest haircut you’ll find will probably cost you around DKK 250, or $35, but if you want to get your hair finished and styled at a top-rated barbershop, expect prices between DKK 300 and 600, that’s around $40-70, depending on the treatment.
When is the best time to visit Copenhagen?
The summer brings the warmest weather to Copenhagen with big events and tons of action. However, tourist crowds also descend upon the city at this time and you can expect the highest hotel prices. For those who don’t mind the mild weather, March to May is a pleasant and breezy time to visit with lower rates and fewer people to navigate.
What is a gentleman’s haircut?
A gentleman’s cut is a style with short sides and a side parting or comb-over. The hair is usually slicked with gel and very clean and kempt. The style is inspired by vintage haircuts and the refinery of a classic gentleman.
Should I tip my barber in Copenhagen?
In Copenhagen, tipping is not a tradition. Exceptional service is a prerequisite, but salaries, even for staff in the hospitality industry, are exceptionally high so tips aren’t deemed necessary. You might receive an additional service charge on some restaurant bills but you don’t need to round it up. Haircuts are also not cheap in Copenhagen and your barber probably would not expect a tip, with service and any taxes usually already calculated in the given price.
